*Note that August 18 is the last day of racing at I-80 Speedway for the Saturday schedule and ABR plans to attend.
07/14/2007: Setup was very good for hot laps and left alone for heat
race. Setup was completely wrong for heat race and crashed against turn
two inner wall, which demolished the bumper and right-front body panels. Done for the night.
06-16-07: Just prior to racing, the Tilley Motorsports crew scaled and adjusted the AutoBaughn Racing car. In the process, a bent shock was found and replaced. The car handled much better than the prior week (the week we’ll never speak of again), but the acceleration/velocity was below normal. We’re checkin’ for slipping in the throttle linkage and anything else that might contribute to a decrease in performance.
06-09-07: The track was dry and loose. The setup was completely wrong for the track conditions. And Ray didn’t adjust his driving properly. And we didn’t get back home till 1:40 a.m. (normally home by 11:30). Let’s never speak of this night again.
05/26/07: Saturday was another mixed day. We changed the setup of the car to match the extremely tacky high-bank half-mile oval conditions. Given that this was the first time the driver and car had been on this track in this condition – caused by the previous night’s rain – Jay “Big Dawg” Norton setup the car to MasterSbilt (http://www.mastersbilt.com/) specs. Between the combination of bad driver decisions and setup, Ray had no control of the car anywhere on the track. With a few laps left, the car seemed to be getting away (loose) in turn four (4), which caused Ray to jerk the steering wheel right. This sudden action on the tacky track ripped the tires off of the left – front and back – wheels. The car was towed into the pits.
With the help of Jay and Dad (Don Baughn), we were able to line up for the A-Feature in 19th place. The setup was put back as it was before the heat race. For the first several laps, Ray drove the car very tentatively staying in the 19th spot. Once Ray felt comfortable with the setup, he passed one or two cars and eventually ran well to finish the race.
Sunday, May 27, Ray and Dad watched the MLRA, NCRA, CLMA and MARS late model racers go head-to-head for a fantastic show. The plan is to work on the car during the week and get back to I-80 Speedway (http://www.neracewaypark.com/I80/index.php) Saturday, June 2.
